Apple’s latest iPads and iPhones come with LIDAR scanner which as many of you know stands for Light Detection and Ranging. It is a sensor to collect depth information from the scene using infrared light. Prior to LIDAR, we used radio waves for this purpose…Radio Detection and Ranging (RADAR). It’s great for shorter distances and more accurate. LIDAR works at a greater distance but not very accurate in fog or rain.

Why am I talking about LIDAR? Because it is the next leap forward for Augmented Reality in consumer devices. For a robot to move around and understand the real…

Often times because of data restrictions for sensitive projects, hosting a repo on bitbucket or git is not an option. At times like this, you want to host your private repo on-premise. You can also use it to place a back up of your code in a remote private repo on site.

A Network Access Storage (NAS) device combines the convenience and usability of public clouds with the data privacy and security guaranteed by private clouds. It allows you to work seamlessly together on documents and spreadsheets in a protected environment.

NAS and especially Synology Diskstation is very often used…

Kafka’s growth is exploding. More than one-third of all Fortune 500 companies use Kafka. These companies include the top travel companies, banks, eight of the top ten insurance companies, nine of the top ten telecom companies, and much more. LinkedIn, Microsoft, and Netflix process four-comma messages a day with Kafka (1,000,000,000,000).

Kafka is used for real-time streams of data, to collect big data, or to do real time analysis (or both). Kafka is used with in-memory microservices to provide durability and it can be used to feed events to CEP (complex event streaming systems) and IoT/IFTTT-style automation systems. — DZone

Cloud will be synonymous with the word Web. Can you think of a business today that’s not on the internet? If you don’t get on the cloud your company could be falling behind quickly.

This article will help you to get what the cloud is even if you don’t know much about technology.

What is the Cloud?

To understand the cloud, let’s talk about the computer in your home. It is primarily composed of 3 things. A storage system for storing data. …

Decision-making is not easy but that’s what a leader has to do all day, every day.

Even if you’re not leading a team in an organization you can still apply these techniques in your daily life with your friends and family.

We’re going to cover two ways to come to a decision. One is to listen to everyone and then make a decision. The other is to let the team decide.
Both of these approaches have their pros and cons and both of these ways are valid and applicable in different scenarios.

At the heart of decision-making is information. There…

Why is the whiteboard your friend…

Intelligence usually has nothing to do with how you do in coding interviews. I’ve seen many intelligent programmers do poorly in interviews. I’ve seen brilliant engineers struggle with thinking things through clearly.

Good programmers freeze in front of the whiteboard. It is not home! Home is their favorite IDE in dark mode.

Before I talk about the whiteboard, let me address some issues that lead up to the freeze, and what you can do about it.

Here are 5 things to watch out for -

The Early Internet and Its Problems

What is the operating system of the Internet? There isn’t one. But, there is an architecture that the Internet follows so it can operate and achieve a massive amount of scale for millions and millions of …make that billions of users. That Architecture is called REST which stands for Representational State Transfer.

Why is REST Important

In the early 90s, the web started expanding. Like the Big Bang Theory, once it started it was unstoppable. It grew exponentially. Within the first 5 years of the Internet, the number of users grew to 40 million.

The growth was going to be unsustainable. The growth was…

The different ways to protect data at rest and in transit

The user’s data is the underlying currency that is driving the API economy. Like any currency, it needs to be handled with care and transported with extreme caution to prevent theft.

Different devices and platforms have different vulnerabilities.

The desktop at home is not as vulnerable as the mobile phone. It’s easier to lose a phone. Someone can get access to the local files stored by mobile apps. This changes the authentication and authorization flow for mobile apps.

Similarly, for single page web apps (SPA), the entire Javascript can be viewed as a source. …

The AWS Learning Series

Delegate to microservices and focus on your business logic

Serverless doesn’t mean that there are no servers. It just means that the servers are managed by the cloud provider.

Historically cloud providers like AWS, Google, and Azure have given us servers to rent. We’d rent the servers, a process called provisioning, and then install our favorite OS and our tech stack along with our server program. We’d put the server in an autoscaling group behind a load balancer so when the demand increases, more servers can be automatically added. When the demand dies down, the auto-scaling group would automatically release the servers so we don’t keep paying for them.

The AWS Learning Series

Software developers hear about load balancers today more than before. Load Balancer was tucked away in the racks in the server room. But, on the cloud, the load balancer is now squarely in the hands of the backend developer to understand and configure!

The load balancer is a program running on a dedicated server whose job is to direct user requests across multiple servers so the requests can be answered in parallel.

Without a load balancing program, a million users would make million API requests. …
